This is a new federal program made possible in the One Big Beautiful Bill, which provide for a tax credit for Pennsylvanians (not a deduction) of up to $1,700 for contributions made to a “Scholarship Granting Organization” (SGO).It only requires the Governor of a state to opt-in in order for their state’s residents and businesses to qualify for the federal tax credit.
If you are familiar with Pennsylvania’s EITC program (where individuals and businesses receive a substantial tax credit when they make donations to a private schools), this is similar to that program.
As of today, Pennsylvania is still not on the list. So far 27 States have opted-in – mostly red states. This does not require ANY legislative action – just a signature from the governor. We are looking to present Josh Shapiro with another 80-20 issue, and a win for parents and schools, by flooding his office with calls.
