So much for the security of the “senate wall”. We have Republicans voting to take money right out of the paychecks of Pennsylvania citizens. SB906 is an AWFUL bill that would take up to 1% out of worker paychecks (a 32% tax increase) and deposit it into a fund managed by the department of Labor & Industry. The fund would compensate workers to take up to five (5) months of paid leave, and require them to hire temporary workers for interim coverage.

The impact of this bill will be larger than any payroll tax increase in Pennsylvania history. It will raise the payroll tax from 3.07% to 4.07% – more than a 32% tax increase. The indirect costs would also put many small businesses OUT OF BUSINESS. See the Text of the bill (39 pages). If this passes the senate, it WILL pass in the House and become law. Our senators MUST hear from us.

Understand WHY this is a terrible bill:

  1. Even if this bill does not receive a vote, it’s language may be added to the budget bill and passed that way. DO NOT LET THEM DO THIS. “No” to any budget that carries this language.
  2. It forces small businesses to be able to pay for big business “benefit”, for which there is often not a demand.
  3. Like so many other new taxes, this will almost certainly end up as a just ‘foot in the door’, with expanding scope and costs coming down the road. According to the text of the bill, a government bureaucracy shall “Evaluate and determine the amount of payroll contributions and maximum employee contributions to ensure fund solvency.”
  4. The bill would also require the business to hire a temporary worker to cover the leave until the employee returns. 

Have these Senate Republicans gone crazy? They are driving democrat bills that will give voters one more reason to stay home in November. Why are Republicans now sponsoring Democrat issues?
